I am so happy to see the Letter of the Day of Friday, March 20, about the invasive Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) legislation. I believe that our legislators, although in Jamaica, are living in a community of utopia that I have not been able to visit as I need to show the guard my tax compliance certificate (TCC).
They want to know the source of income to pay insurance premium of $4,000 and to send money of $3,000 to granny in country! Why are the supermarkets, telephone companies and not to mention gas stations and Jamaica Public Service not also requesting this type of information? Many of us would be happy if that was all we were paying!
The POCA may have been well intended, but give us a break. What is a helper to do if she gets a $5,000 a week and something happens with the aunt who raised her, if she decides to send her relative $3,000? What frustration is she going to face?! I wonder how many of us have died over foolishness like this.
Public transportation
I maintain that the Government and its legislators continue to make such legislation and policies that are anti-poor and anti-lower income, that are more beneficial to the upper and richer echelons of society.
It continues from the basic services which allows the Government to provide non-existence or deplorable sidewalks for pedestrians while fixing uptown side streets; and to allow "moving adult clubs" as public transportation. I suppose it is these same decision-makers who think it is best to keep the prime minister of the country in an old, compromised vehicle, costing the country more than it would take to just get a new decent vehicle.
All this going on while the person laundering the money laughs as he passes us on his way to the appointment with the bank.
Let us pray, and all of us try to do our part, no matter how small it is, and just maybe we can turn this country Jamaica, land we love. God bless Jamaica.
I am, etc.,
