Issue: Should Jamaica tighten visa requirements?
Impose tighter visa regime

The Editor, Sir:

I believe it is time for the Government to consider introducing visas and charges for visas for non-ARICOM visitors and immigrants to our island.

The United Kingdom (UK) and United States (US) change their immigration rules regularly and use the words "protecting their borders" to justify the changes. We have a lot to offer in terms of our climate and a number of other exciting things, too much to note at present, and, although tourism is a major source of income to the country, we could increase our revenue, particularly in this world economic crisis.

We need to march into the 21st century and start acting like our old colonials, charging them to enter our country. I do not believe it will stop them from coming but it will raise revenue that could be used to benefit Jamaica. We are our worst enemies when we continue to allow them to just buy a ticket and turn up on our doorsteps regardless, and yet we are bound by their rules, regulations and costs that is closely bordering on their doors almost being firmly closed in our faces.

Turnaround time

We need to introduce a visa-on-line process in order for people to enter our country just like the UK, US and other countries. This should be followed by a fee for the visa and a very quick turnaround time as long as the applicants meet the criteria. It would also create new jobs for our people and see us 'stepping-up' as a developing country.

I hope the Government will look at this and get over the fear of losing tourists.

I am, etc.,

S. Johnson
