Finding the right solution
The Editor, Sir:

The crime situation in Jamaica is a concern to all and is by no means a matter to be left hanging.

Our nation cries out daily, with families losing their loved ones and allies being separated by the dragon called crime.

In addition to the current economic crisis, Jamaica is faced with a high crime rate. Is it that the situation has grown worst? Or, is it just that more cases are being reported? It is my belief that only the symptoms are being addressed. There is a root cause and, in order to get to this point, the leaders need to look at ways of getting to the underlying problem.

Is it that the system of policing being used has allowed the hunted to be in the company of the hunter? Police Officers are supposed to be feared yet respected individuals.

Community policing

Though I support community activities involving police personnel, I am still trying to understand community policing. In my opinion, the objective is to create a system that will encourage confidence based on a relationship driven by results. However, the way data is processed may not facilitate overall information sharing and information preservation for quick access to a lawman on the ground.

Overseas help may be necessary for training but not necessarily to take away from the serving members to envision upward mobility. Let us look within as there are numerous untapped skills within the system and if we do not use them we may well lose them.

I am, etc.,
