Mico fosters father-son relationships -Father pledges lifelong support to adopted children
Nadisha Hunter, Gleaner Writer

While many fathers shun their responsibilities, Christopher Gordon dedicates his life to caring for three children, only one of whom is his.

He said he wasn't fortunate enough to have his own father around while he was growing up, so he has set out to help those in similar situations.

"I know what it is to be without a father, so I make sure to give my son what he duly deserves," he said.

The day-to-day chores associated with raising the children all fall on Gordon's shoulders, as the children's mother leaves the house early in the mornings when they are still asleep and returns after they retire to bed.

Daily activities

His chores include preparing two meals per day, transporting the children to and from school and, just when one would think his parenting job would be over, he is up at nights with the toddlers helping them with their homework. The final task for the day is to get them to bed.

Despite his many responsibilities, Gordon said he is a stickler for discipline and won't let his busy schedule compromise his beliefs.

The 36-year-old Ministry of National Security employee said he and his two sons and daughter has a close bond and he would forever continue to be part of their lives.

"It's strange how men abandon their children because the love I have for my youths is so amazing," the dedicated father said.

He said he will continue to empower his children by working hard to get the best for them.

" I want my children to get the best education so when it's time for them to make decisions for themselves, they are not subject to menial living," he continued.

Empowering Our Boys

Gordon was one of the many fathers present at the Mico Practising Primary and Junior High School's boys' day yesterday.

According to the guidance counsellor and coordinator of the programme, Adrian Brown, the event, held under the theme 'Empowering Our Boys', was in an effort to teach courteousness, respect and help make better men tomorrow.

He said that in the process, the school sets out to develop the relationship between boys and their fathers.
