Montego Bay's Barnett estate rezoning started in 2000

Kerr-Jarrett

The new $356 million information technology park being spearheaded by Montego Bay businessman Mark Kerr-Jarrett has been made possible through a nearly nine-year-old approval granted by the Government that allows for much of the former Barnett sugar estate lands to be put to commercial and residential development use.

Kerr-Jarrett disclosed information on the new call centre infrastructure facility last week in an interview with The Gleaner. The story, carried in Wednesday Business incorrectly suggested that the development was being facilitated by a new government approval.

"The truth is that the rezoning of 1,500 acres of Barnett Estates lands, known as the Montego Bay South Master Plan, was approved in principle by Cabinet in January 2000 and led by the then Prime Minister the Most Honourable P.J. Patterson," Kerr-Jarrett has explained.

He noted his development company, Barnett Limited, has been building out the master plan on a phased project-by-project basis that has involved the Bogue Village residential community, the Westgate Hills housing estate, Fairview Shopping Centre, and the Fairfield commercial development at Bogue and the Miriam Way/Clock Tower commercial sub-division.
