The boys from St Jago and Holmwood Technical's girls topped the two-day 2009 Milo-sponsored Central Athletics Championships, which ended with 32 new records at GC Foster College on Friday.

St Jago scored a massive 315.5 points to take the boys' section, well ahead of nearest rivals Edwin Allen (127.5), Vere (108), Old Harbour (104) and Holmwood (102).

On the girls' side, Holmwood, with 396 points, finished well ahead of Edwin Allen (323). Vere (262.5), Manchester High (242) and St Jago (227.5) rounded out the top five.

Coach pleased

Maurice Wilson, coach of defending Girls' Champs winners Holmwood, said he was pleased with his team's performances, more so their fighting spirit.

"Having gone to Central Champs, I am really encouraged," he said. "If I did not see what took place at Central Champs I would not be encouraged."

The highlight of the meet, however, could be considered the performance of Sandrae Farquharson, Manchester High's star Class Three athlete, who ran a record 23.95 for her 200-metre victory. Farquharson, on Thursday's opening day, also took the 400m in 54.52.

Upset upset

Old Harbour High's star athlete, Kemar Bailey-Cole, who upset his rivals to take the under-20 boys' 100m at the Carifta Trials, also won two gold medals after sharing the boys' 200m title with St Jago's André Walsh, both recording 21.32.

Holmwood's Samantha Woodburn was also in superb form, clocking a personal best and championship record 53.78 to win the girls' Class Two 400m event, beating Edwin Allen's Amoya Blake, who finished in 54.71.

Old Harbour's Jamie Wilson completed the Class Two boys' sprint double when he captured the 200m title in 21.94. Allayne Cunningham of Guys Hill took Class Three in 22.86.

In the girls 200m, Edwin Allen's Gayon Evans also completed a double when she ran 23.98 to add the 200m to her 100m title.
