Dissatisfied at slow railway development
The Editor, Sir:

I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with the Government's slow response to revive the Jamaica Railway Corporation. Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry, in his 2008-2009 Sectoral Debate at Gordon House, promised rail resuscitation to begin before 2008 year end. Now, however, it appears that the promises were all for show.

I agree with both the Indian and the Chinese representatives when they blamed the prior Jamaica Government for foot-dragging the project. The irresponsible lack of attention by both the JLP and PNP governments has led directly to the devastation of rural communities.

When I visited Jamaica last year, I was unable to reach many of the attractions in the rural areas because of the poor roads. Rail service would help to revitalise the economy by providing direct transportation for tourists wanting to visit major tour attractions.

Serious blow to small farmers

The impact of the loss of rail service to rural communities in Jamaica is also a serious blow to small farmers. Ever since the development of the Jamaica Railway Corporation, the passenger rail service has been an important part of our Jamaican identity. No one would disagree that transportation is a key ingredient for rural communities to thrive and the lack of rail service makes it difficult for rural communities to survive. The recent market truck tragedy in Portland could have been avoided had there been rail service.

Providing funding for the revitalisation of rail service in rural Jamaica would contribute to the economic and social well-being of these communities. If properly managed, the rail service will become financially self-sustaining and being in a position to reward its capital providers.

I am, etc.,
