Remake in unusual musical place
The remake of Admiral Tibet's Serious Time is in an unusual Jamaican musical place. It is not only in the category of the relatively rare combination of a singer and two deejays, but it is also one of the post-1990 Sting clash songs, even though it does not mention matters of musical mayhem or the annual Boxing Day mega concert.

The deejay-and-singer combination has long been a part of Jamaican music, as has the deejay duo. But finding an outstanding song with a singer and two deejays is highly unusual. One of the few is It Was Written, with singer Stephen Marley and deejays Damian 'Jr Gong' Marley and Capleton (plus a little input from Drag-on). Then there is Big, Bad and Broad with Heavy D and Supercat as the deejays and Frankie Paul as the singer.

It Was Written appears on Jr Gong's 2001 Half-Way Tree album.

'anniworseary'

Then there are the post-Sting songs, poet DYCR having one about the infamous 2003 staging when Ninja Man and Vybz Kartel ended up in a physical clash on the stage. DYCR was not involved, but he certainly heard the crashing of bottles and the saw the crowd stampedes. And, he observed that it was supposed to be Sting's 20th anniversary, but it turned out to be its "anniworseary".

DYCR also referred to a landmark event in Sting history, when Supercat flung a bottle into the crowd in 1991 when he clashed with Ninja Man. DYCR said that if he had been hit by a bottle "me woulda return one back like Supercat".

The latest and still current post-Sting clash song comes from Vybz Kartel, after the Settlement of All Argument with Mavado on Boxing Day last year. He starts out with the observation that Mavado "run like a wounded dog" and from there develops the song into a tale of the clash, jeering Mavado all the way.

And he advises Mavado "nex' year no do no more damn Sting".
