The University of the West Indies Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (UWI STAT) group, has launched a regional essay competi-tion, targeted at high school and UWI students in territories which support the institution.

The essay topics centre on the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). With the winning entry to receive $10,000, students in first to fourth form are being asked to write on: 'My idea of a perfect Caribbean Island', utilising various aspects of culture, history, geography, language and food from the Caribbean.

Entrants from fifth and sixth form are required to write on the topic: 'The media do not do enough to promote the CSME. Do you agree or disagree? Say why and highlight the importance of the media in the integration process'.

The winner in this category will receive $12,000.

UWI students are required to write a more detailed essay, to 'Critically discuss the relevance of the CSME in the global economy', or on the topic: 'Should your country remain a member of CARICOM? Give reasons to support your answer'.

The best essayist will be awarded a $120,000 grant and the Professor E. Nigel Harris Chancellor's CSME trophy.

Formed by Harris in 2006, UWI STAT provides students oppor-tunities for integration with their Caribbean colleagues. It encourages the development of leadership skills and provides experiences which enhance education and promotes regional UWI's 'Pelican Pride' through involvement in campus, community and alumni activities.

The group is currently hosting CSME Awareness Week.
