Next Sunday at the University Chapel, Mona, St Andrew, the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) Chamber Choir will present its spring concert featuring a plethora of inspirational choral music.

This will be the ensemble's third concert appearance in the capital city on the University of the West Indies campus, its most recent being held last October where it celebrated the music of Jamaican classical composers and the historic victories of the athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Comprising 27 talented singers, the choir specialises in performing music from the classical tradition, with an emphasis on Afrocentric works, particularly from the African-American and West Indian traditions.

Under the direction of Andrew Marshall, the concert will reflect this sweeping array of styles and genres, performing works by George Frederic Handel, Gabriel Faure, Ludwig van Beethoven, Maurice Ravel, Nathaniel Dett, Lloyd Hall and stirring arrangements of African-American and Jamaican spirituals.

In addition to the choral component of the evening, members will perform contemporary music by popular Jamaican artistes as an encore to their most recent Black History Month concert held in February in Mandeville titled Untold Stories, a presentation that surveyed the political, sociological and cultural overtones in black music of our era.

The choir will also launch their sophomore album titled Land of My Birth. The project features works and arrangements of Jamaican classical musicians.

More than a week ago, members of the Chamber Choir performed at the swearing-in ceremony of Governor General Dr Patrick Allen at King's House.
