In a letter written to you recently, Sir, and one which you very kindly published, I had occasion to comment on the performance of one Daryl Harper during the first Test match of the current series between the West Indies and England.
In that match, Harper acted in the capacity of the third (replay) umpire and, despite the benefit of slow-motion replays, made a decision which was, to all who saw it, simply beyond belief. At that time, I commented that whereas I was in no way questioning his motives behind the decision, his gross incompetence was visible for all to see.
At the time of writing this letter, it is the close of the third day of the fourth Test Match being played in Barbados and Harper has just made two decisions (involving Chanderpaul and Nash), again after having the benefit of slow-motion replays, which to all, including the English commentators, were astonishing!
In my previous letter, I had expressed the hope that the 'powers that be' would have taken note and acted accordingly. I again repeat that call that Daryl Harper must go!
Which brings me to my second reason for writing this letter - the silence of the West Indies Cricket Board in response to all of this has been deafening! Also, its gross incompetence over the years, in being the guardians of our highly treasured institution of West Indies Cricket having been long-established, is reason enough to call for the members to pack their bags and leave with Harper!
I am, etc.,
Dr JOHN C. ROYES
