Road fatalities mount: 63 persons killed in traffic accidents this year
Arthur Hall, Senior Staff Reporter

The carnage on the nation's roadways continued Thursday evening with 16 year-old Shavez Williams becoming the latest victim.

The teenager, of a Content Gardens, St Ann address, was one of four students of Oracabessa High School mowed down by a speeding driver on the Oracabessa main road in St Mary.

Travis Willliams 14, of Content Gardens, Andean Nembhard 16, of Boscobel St Mary and 16-year-old Wayne Good of Front Hill, Port Maria were the others injured in the incident.

Reports are that about 8 p.m., the four students left the James Bond Beach where they attended a school sporting event and were walking along the Oracabessa main road when they were hit by a red Toyota Rav 4.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop.

The teens received multiple injures and were taken to hospital by residents where Williams was pronounced dead, Nembhard and Good were admitted in stable condition and Williams treated and released.

Up to late yesterday the police were still searching for the driver of the Rav 4.

The incident in St Mary came hours after a five vehicle collision on the Montpelier main road in St James left 30-year old Cotesha Gayle dead and five members of her family nursing injuries.

Despite a concentrated effort by the National Road Safety Council and the police, 63 persons have already lost their lives on the nation's streets in the 65 days of the year.

The National Road Safety Council is in the middle of a campaign dubbed 'Save 300 Lives' which it launched late last year.

The campaign, which is a collaborative effort between the council and the Cabinet office, is aimed at keeping road-traffic fatalities at under 300 each year.
