Asafa Powell, despite failing to deliver on his promised sub-10 seconds clocking, expressed satisfaction with his first 100-metre outing at yesterday's World Athletics Tour Melbourne, a Grand Prix status meeting which is part of the IAAF World Athletics Tour.
Powell, running in windy and cold weather with a 1.4m/s wind, clocked 10.23 seconds, beating his clubmate Nesta Carter, who was second in 10.42 seconds.
After the race, Powell was quoted by the IAAF website as saying: "It was a bit cold, the wind was heavy, but I'm still satisfied. I made it through. So I got this over with and I know where I'm at. I got home safely and there are no injuries so I'm happy."
Other Jamaican winner
Shericka Williams, Beijing's 400m silver medallist, was the day's other Jamaican winner. She took the 200-metre race in 23.90 seconds ahead of Australian Melissa Breen (23.96).
In the women's 400m, Melaine Walker, the Olympics 400m hurdles champions, finished third in 52.26, behind Australian Tamsyn Lewis (51.86) and New Zealand champion Monique Williams (52.20).
Brigitte Foster-Hylton (13.11) was second in the women's 100m hurdles, beaten by Australia's Olympic 100m hurdles silver medallist, Sally McLellan (13.06).
"I wasn't going to let (Foster-Hylton) beat me in my home country," the 22-year-old McLellan said.
