Waterford set for out right victory

Waterford High secured first- innings points over Campion College on the opening day of the two-day Grace Shield cricket semi-final match at Waterford yesterday.

Led by a brilliant all-around performance from Vandrane Rowe, who took 7-21, Campion were skittled out for a meagre 104.

Peter Warrison chipped in with 2-32 as only Karl Todd (28), Brandon King (26) and Jason Leigh (22) made any worthwhile contribution.

In reply, Waterford raced to 253 for seven declared as Rowe followed up his magnificent bowling performance by scoring 74, as he and his team's top scorer, Warrison (84), demolished Campion's bowling.

Well-executed innings

Warrison's well-executed innings was laced with five fours and two sixes. Javier Campbell (38) was the next high scorer for the hosts, while Brent Marston (2-29) and Brad Gillings (2-44) were the main wicket-takers for Campion College.

Batting a second time, Campion closed on 14-1 when bad light stopped play, still 135 runs in arrears.

When they resume today's final day at 10:30 a.m., their first objective will be to clear the deficit.

Meanwhile, the entire day's play of the second semi-final between St Catherine High and Calabar was rained out. Play is scheduled today at the St John's Road-based school and is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
