Style SATURDAY: Don't overdo it!

While it is fun to go low, there is consensus among medical practitioners that persons should moderate their use of flats, which can cause injury.

Chiropractor Dr Michael Harvey said the wearing of sandals can alter one's gait.

"The wearer is forced to angulate his or her toes to keep the shoes on his feet. This causes the person to take shorter steps due to lack of support," he told Saturday Life.

After prolonged wearing, sandals cause pain in the feet, ankles and shin splints, along with strains of the Achilles tendon in the lower legs. Even more, tension is increased in the lumbar musculature, discs and spinal ligaments.

Research has shown that these injuries were serious enough to put over 55,000 wearers in the hospital in one recent year alone!

The remedy for this is balance. Don't overdo the sandal wearing.
