Powell eyes sub-10 clocking

Asafa Powell

SYDNEY, Australia (CMC):

Jamaica's enigmatic sprint ace Asafa Powell is keen on launching his international season in the same vein in which last year's campaign was waged - a sub-10 clocking.

The 26-year-old flopped dramatically at the Beijing Olympics last August but then proceeded to speed to seven consecutive times of under 9.90 seconds, including a dip below 9.80 twice.

Powell will now aim for similar pyrotechnics when he runs the 100 metres in Melbourne next Thursday.

"Sub-10 is very, very possible," said Powell, who is yet to win gold at a major international meet.

"This is my third time coming to Australia and I would really love to give the crowd something fantastic."

Powell has been training here in preparation for the Sydney Track Classic this weekend where he will run the 400 metres, an event designed to improve his stamina.

In his best shape yet

His coach Stephen Francis said he backed his charge to run below 10 seconds next week, contending he looked in excellent condition.

"He's in a lot better shape than he has ever been. His tests back home have been very good," said Francis.

"If conditions are right he should definitely break 10 seconds because he's in great shape."

Powell's preparation is being geared toward the World Cham-pionships in Berlin in August where he will attempt to break his jinx at major meets.
