Girls lose again

Aiken

Jamaica's Sunshine Girls suffered their second consecutive series defeat to arch-rivals England, when they went down 55-49 in the final game of their three-Test series in Nottingham yesterday.

The Jamaicans had earlier lost 67-54 and 57-47 to the hosts.

The Jamaicans were also beaten 3-0 by England in 2007 prior to their departure for the World Netball Championships in New Zealand. The Sunshine Girls went on to capture the bronze medal at the championships, beating England in the third-place play-off.

Annette Daley, assistant coach of Jamaica, said despite yesterday's defeat, she believes that the team played well.

Best showing

"This is the best match we have played in our three games because we were able to make a number of good runs at crucial points of the match," said Daley.

"However, we failed to capitalise on this because of anxiety ... and a number of errors down the stretch."

Daley added that the inexperience of the team also played a major part in the team's series loss.

"I think that the inexperience was also a factor because England had a lot more experienced players in their team," she said. "I think that with a lot more high-intensity games these younger players are definitely going to get better," Daley added.

Romelda Aiken led the way for the Sunshine Girls with 38 goals from 38 attempts and received support from captain Simone Forbes, 11 goals from 12 tries. Pam Cookey, 29 goals from 38 attempts, and Rachel Dunn, 14 goals from 15 tries, were the major scorers for England.
