Pathological insensitivity
The Editor, Sir:

Thursday's letter from Gloria Dixon regarding crowd behaviour at a funeral home in relation to the displayed body of a murdered teenager is an effective commentary on the pathological insensitivity that is endemic in society.

This behaviour is up (or down) there with that of some of our politicians who seize any opportunity to despise law-abiding members of society based upon their gender, age, economic status or sexual orientation. That a country with such high standing in the arts, higher education and athletics (among others) could be racing towards the bottom at such a sustained pace is, indeed, pathetic.

That so many, including a large tract of the so-called religious leadership, have abandoned all efforts at correction is sad and more in need of discussion than are feigned concerns about abortion and homosexuality.

Ms Dixon's letter is quite timely and in line with your efforts at exposing the less-than-admirable downward evolution of society.

I am, etc.,
