A failure to comprehend
The Editor, Sir:

In response to the letter 'She lick her head?' in The Gleaner of February 26, I would like to comment that some Jamaicans have once again demonstrated their inability to comprehend.

Dr Carolyn Cooper's view may be different from many Jamaican educators, but by no means less informative than any other perspective. The fundamental view of Dr Cooper's article was that there is good in everything, including dancehall music.

I personally do not promote the airing of lewd music in public spaces and Dr Cooper did not say or even insinuate that she would wish for our children to be privy to such. However, she did explore in detail and with must analytical and historical prowess the equivalents in our society to the musical work. She went further to comment on Chaucer's work which was deemed lewd then. Dancehall should not be deemed as bad or demonic because it is Jamaican. The content is the same as most genres of music; however, it has adopted the Jamaican language as its communication medium.

There is a time and place for everything and our dancehall is an integral part of Jamaican culture. It feeds family, schoolchildren and give many the opportunity to flee from evil, violent activities.

I encourage all persons to reread that article and realise the depth of the article as dancehall is Jamaican poetry. However, it is adult material and children should not be exposed to such.

I am, etc.,

JODIE-ANN FRANCIS
