When pregnant women go kangaroo crazy, fashion usually doesn't make the priority list. But keeping in vogue is still important for maintaining image and preventing mental health from going off a cliff.

You might have already been fumbling through your closet trying to figure out how to dress so you don't look like a walking tent? While some women who are preggers think they can get away with squeezing into their regular attire or moving up a size or two, generally it just won't cut it. At least not for long. By the time your belly blossoms, roomier regulars just won't fit.

There has never been a more fashionable era for pregnant woman than there is today, as women have been translating their signature style into belly-friendly looks. Believe it or not, some styles look especially attractive on pregnant women, such as A-line skirts, empire-waist dresses and tops.

Knowing where to start in shopping for maternity clothes can be a bit frustrating. Lord knows a woman's body changes dramatically in just a few short months and if not careful you may end up buying more than necessary.

Ditch your husband's XL T-shirt and read these tips to find out the best way to showcase your baby bump.

In general, look for form-fitting tops that accentuate your growing belly. This is much more flattering than one that covers you up in yards of fabric. Tops with ties or a gathered hem under the belly are among the hot picks as well. Keeping in mind you will grow in your chest, back, arms and belly, but usually not across the shoulders. So search for shirts that still fit your shoulders with room in those other areas.

Dresses with tiebacks and empire waists will give your body some form as well as bump-hugging ones will up your sex appeal, particularly if your confidence is in the doldrums.

Invest in maternity bras and pants. As your breast size increases, as well as your rib radius, a bra too small can result in back bulges and cleavage overdose. When shopping for pants, remember your belly will grow so make purchases that can accommodate future growth. Most important, look for material that stretches and is machine-washable.

Be positive and flaunt the new voluptuous you!

5 essential garments for a stylish 40 weeks

Maternity denim: A great-fitting pair of jeans in a cut you prefer is essential. Try out an adjustable waistband, stretch material and a flattering cut, such as boot-leg. This is a good item to splurge on because you will probably wear these after your baby is born. For maximum wear, buy a darker wash that dresses up for work or play, day or night.

A not-so-little black dress: A black dress, though not as petite as you're used to, is a pregnancy fundamental. Make choices that can be dressed up or down, either for a casual day out or date night with Honey.

Tailored suit: Maintain a professional look by buying pants and suits that are designed for a pregnant body. Details like belly panels and side shirring will ensure perfect fit throughout your pregnancy. Stick to basic colours (black or brown) with a lightweight material.

Belly Band: One essential purchase for every pregnant woman is the belly band. This elasticised band helps you wear your regular pants or skirts longer (by concealing an open zipper), holds up too-loose maternity pants early in pregnancy and helps you fit into your normal pants sooner, post-partum.

Tops: Pick up a figure-hugging top with a cute neckline to accentuate your bump. A flirty and feminine empire-waist shirt is also a great look, complete with a fitted tee.

5 steps to avoid

Told you, being a fashionable mom-to-be is easier than you think. It's simple, listen to your inner fashionista and avoid these top five couture missteps.

Forgetting your style: Don't start wearing tailored suits if your pre-pregnancy wardrobe only had jeans and T-shirts. Find clothes that fit your physique.

Waiting too long: To get the longest wear of your maternity clothes, buy them early. You might have to buy clothes at least twice during your pregnancy: once by the end of the first trimester and again in the third trimester when your belly grows bigger than you ever thought possible. Get more bang for your buck by buying your maternity wear early.

Buying everything at once: It is impossible to tell what your size will be at Week 28 when you are at Week 8. Start slowly, buy a few pieces as your body changes, adding one or two more where necessary, especially maternity bras.

Wearing oversize clothes: Avoid the 'tent' look by choosing clothes that fit and gently hug your growing tummy.

Forgetting to be pampered: Pregnancy is a wonderful and emotional experience, especially for a first-time mom. So go ahead, indulge yourself and get a pedicure and a fabulous haircut to complement the package. You will feel sexy.

Because you are dressing for two now doesn't mean you have to totally change your sartorial style. If you love hip, trendy fashion or well-tailored pieces before you were pregnant, you can look just as snazzy now that you are sporting a bump.
