Brown leads Jamaica fightback

Odean Brown ... bagged six for 85.

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC:

Three top-order batsmen hit half-centuries to put the Windward Islands in a strong position, but leg-spinner Odean Brown grabbed six wickets to haul Jamaica back into the seventh round WICB regional four-day contest on the opening day yesterday.

Andre Fletcher stroked 61, Kevin James scored 55 and Keddy Lesporis got an even 50 as the Windwards, sent in to bat, cruised to 212 for four at tea before being dramatically bowled out for 261 in the final session.

The collapse was prompted by Brown who claimed six for 85 as the hosts lost their last six wickets for 46 runs.

At the close, Jamaica had reached 15 without loss, still 246 runs behind at the Windsor Park Stadium.

Off to a great start

Windwards got off to a great start with Lesporis and Johnson Charles (26) posting 70 for the first wicket, batting solidly against Jamaica's pace duo of Andrew Richardson and Dave Bernard.

With neither proving penetrative, Brown claimed both batsmen within 19 runs of each other with Lesporis striking seven fours and one six off 78 balls.

Fletcher and James then took centre stage in an 88-run, third wicket stand which propelled the Windwards to 177 and laying the foundation for a big score.

The right-handed Fletcher hit six fours in an innings lasting 102 balls and 113 minutes while James hit three fours in a patient knock that spanned three hours and 14 minutes.

When Fletcher was bowled by Brown after lunch, it triggered a slide that saw Darren Sammy (9), Donwell Hector (8) and captain Rawl Lewis (8) falling cheaply.

Slow bowler Tamar Lambert chipped in with two for 22 while West Indies left-arm spinner Nikita Miller finished with two for 45.
