Commish signals big changes for JCF

Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin - file

WESTERN BUREAU:

Commissioner of police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin has said the strategic review of the Jamaica Constabulary Force was complete and that changes would stem from it.

"We have started a journey to transform and cleanse our police force," Lewin said during his keynote address at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica's 44th Anniversary Luncheon held in Montego Bay yesterday.

Lewin said the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Strategic Review was complete and that the organisation now had "the template with which to move forward".

"It (JCF Strategic Review) looks at five themes by which the force must fix itself: culture must be worked on, corruption, accountability, leadership, and management and professionalisation," Lewin said.

According to the police commissioner, the report would not be one of those where recom-mendations are ignored.

"The easy part is, of course, to do the study and to present the documents. Now comes that national difficult part that you all know of - implementation of recommendations, because we have a history of non-implementation," said Lewin.

Lewin said notwithstanding, he was very optimistic that the recommendations would be implemented even though it might take some time.

The police commissioner also went on to say other organisations in Jamaica needed to follow suit and purge themselves of inefficiencies and corruption.
