Choosing the right red

Not all reds are created equal but finding the right one for you doesn't have to be a daunting task. First, identify your skin tone - a basic fair, bronze and deep will do.

Fair: A light pink undertone in your red lipstick will bring instant lift and life to your skin tone and overall appearance. Look for 'cherry' in your labels.

Bronze: Fire-engine red lipstick should inject class and sass into your dinner date on Valentine's and, most important, will leave your beau unable to quench the blaze!

Deep: Opt for a plum-based red, which will not only play up your deep tone but will undoubtedly have you feeling fruity and flirty.

When playing up your lips in preparation, remember ...

Go easy on the eyes. Eyes and lips should never compete for your face's focus. A simple eyebrow bone highlight, black or brown eyeliner and a bit of mascara for volume work well.

Contour your cheek bones with a touch of blush or bronzer to make your smile appear that much brighter.

Lip balm, lipstick and lipgloss are three completely different tools which serve three different purposes. So use all three to soften, add colour and shine your lips, respectively.
