Anderson

Waterhouse Football Club continued their rebound in the Digicel Premier League yesterday, defeating Sporting Central Academy 2-0 at the Drewsland Mini-Stadium.

Waterhouse, who have managed to remain in the top six of the league standings, have now moved to 31 points, two behind St Georges, which were held goalless by Village United at Lynch Park, Buff Bay.

Sporting Central sit firmly at the bottom of the league on 16.

Upsetting blow

In only the second minute, Jermaine Anderson delivered an upsetting blow to Sporting Central as he opened the scoreline. With a clear shot from inside the 18-yard box, the unmarked Anderson fired into the goal.

Sporting Central responded well to the pressure but were unable to find the right footing to secure a goal. They controlled well and executed quick passes, but were no match for the Waterhouse team, which played at a higher level.

By the 65th minute, Anderson succeeded in scoring the double for Waterhouse. A solid right-corner kick by Irvino English was headed home by Anderson.

Paul Young, head coach of Waterhouse, was pleased with the performance of his players.

"First of all, we made the commitment that we had to win all our home games. Today was one of those days as the onus was on us to come and perform," Young said.

"Part of our strategy was to get a goal in the first 10 minutes. After we scored the second goal, the game was pretty much won. We have a little time now to do some work to get things going," he added.

Brandon Murray, managing director of Sporting Central Academy, is optimistic that his team will rise from the bottom of the league.

"We have lost the game and unfortunately, as we did in the Tivoli game, we gave up an early goal. It put us under pressure early, but we still responded quite well and competed well as a team," Murray said.

Going to the next-round

"But as far as we are concerned we know where we are. We fully understand our position, that we are at the bottom of the table and we would have preferred to be going into the next round with a win or at least a draw," he said.

With 16 games to go, Murray stated that they would have to go back to the drawing board and develop a strategy that would help the team to secure more goals.

"We have to face that reality that we do not have some of our Under-20 players. It is a privilege for us to have them in the national squad, but we also have to realise they are not available to us as we would like. We have to look beyond that and continue to try to build on what we have," he said.
