Plan for the struggle ahead
The Editor, Sir:

Jamaicans should start planning for the long economic struggle that lies ahead, given what is happening in the world. I do know that for many hustling Jamaicans, this will not make a difference in their lives. I am talking to the profilers, the ones who get new outfits, get their nails and hair done every week, even though they don't have a job. Things are going to get worse in Jamaica because it is not looking too good here in America.

The word that I hear very often now in America is 'depression'. And as old time people used to say, "If it no go so, it nearly go so". You can't wait until the writing is on the wall before you take action. You have to be smart and start to make some positive moves for the long journey that lies ahead.

Backyard gardens

Jamaicans need to start making their gardens again, even if that is to plant callaloo in pots, because then, you will only need to buy flour for dumplings, or rice to go with it. We have to face reality, and this situation that the world is facing is real. When you have white-collar workers who used to make thousands of dollars weekly who have lost their jobs, their houses, their cars and now have to be in line to get something to eat, that is sobering. When you have people lining up from early in the day in minus-40°F temperature to see a dentist offering free care, that is reality.

We can't go about as if things were the same - it is not business as usual. Therefore, we have to be mindful of the situation around us. Now is not the time to be wasteful or boastful, but instead, we have to be thankful for what we have, no matter how small it may be. We also have to share with each other and communicate with each other. It is going to be a long, tough road ahead of us, but being prepared for the long haul can make a huge difference.

I am, etc.,
