Love on a prayer (and Yahoo Messenger!)

"She's beautiful, and Chinese!" That's what Dexter Wilmot thought 11 years ago when he first met Sabrina Myers. Eighteen-year-old Myers was going through a rough break-up and Wilmot spent a few weeks 'counselling' her. The relationship that began via a conference call through a mutual friend, Jason, finally materialised into them meeting.

Eleven years later, Myers and Wilmot said their 'I dos'. That was 51 days ago.

"Marriage teaches you so much about yourself and your spouse," said Myers, her voice laced with post-honeymoon exuberance.

"The last month has been educational; marriage is amazing!"

A few years after the teenagers met, Myers and her family migrated to the United States. Prior to the move, Wilmot was working for her father's Phillip G. H. Myers and Associates. He was more like a member of the family than an employee.

A few years after she left, he finally told her how he felt. She was blown away and shared that she had similar feelings for him. Dexter admits to having always secretly loved Sabrina, but felt that as an employee, the family might not embrace the thought of them being together. But since then Wilmot has been praying that Myers would one day be his wife.

They continued with their separate lives for a while, but the connection was still there and they kept in touch.

"One day I realised she always makes me laugh, realised that (with) of all the people I've dated, I never had that connection, I can be myself, be goofy," said Wilmot.

Prayer

Both being Christians, they constantly prayed about the situation. For Myers, being apart made her feelings for him even stronger. "My feelings for him developed. The more we were apart, the more I wanted to be with him. In 2007, I had just started my career (as a nurse), and he was ending his degree in construction engineering at the University of Technology. I prayed, 'God, please lead the man you have for me in my life and the woman you have for Dexter to him. Even though I love him, let Your will be done', she recalled.

"We didn't know how it would happen."

For Sabrina, Dexter was "the one person who understands me and cheers me up when I'm down".

In 2008, he proposed while they were having a conversation about the hypothetical situation of them being married. While speaking on the phone, they were also on instant messenger.

Suddenly, the words 'WILL YOU MARRY ME?" popped up on the screen.

"My heart was racing and I said yes!" recalls Myers.

When Sabrina returned to Jamaica, Wilmot proposed on his knees on his birthday, where the river meets the sea (it's now their secret private spot!)

"I resigned my job and God moved me to Jamaica in August of 2008," concludes Sabrina. The couple were married on December 20, 2008 in the same house in which they met over a decade before.

For Mrs Wilmot, "The greatest thing about marriage is the love and acceptance you get from that person you love, who loves you on your pretty days and not-so-pretty days.
