Sad news re Windalco
The Editor, Sir:

It is with great sadness that we are witnessing the the temporary closure of Windalco bauxite company. We first met as opponents when I took on this giant over the 'fish kill' which was caused by the company's caustic waste in the Rio Cobre a few years ago.

We were not met with hostility or indifference by this company, but rather, with understanding, and a sense of finding out what they could do for, and with the community, to make up for this accident. This was amicably resolved. It was because of this association that we got to know Basil Fernandez of the Water Resources Authority, and Parris Lyew-Ayee of the Jamaica Bauxite Institute, both great professionals with whom we liaised during this period and after.

Since that time, Windalco had become a major coalition partner in furthering our work at Spanish Town Citizens Against Gun Violence, here in Spanish Town. We'd like to especially thank Kayon Headley-Wallace, their communications manager. We know that, in spite of the difficulty, they will come back stronger than ever. For everything there is a season. Let us be assured that in this season of turbulence we will find shelter in the wings of wisdom to reach far up into the mountains and wait for the calm. Good luck and Godspeed.

I am, etc.,
