Perils of Grants Crescent
The Editor, Sir:

Grants Crescent is an adjoining road leading off Hagley Park Road on to Montgomery Avenue in Richmond Park, St Andrew.

The residents, in the past, have tried to make amends of their problems by donating their time, effort and resources to fill potholes whenever and wherever they are formed along their road.

However, with the onset of the heavy rains last year, in addition to the heavy traffic flow on our narrow roadway which is being used by many drivers of utility and private-passenger vehicles as a 'turn off' or short cut going to and from Hagley Park Road through to Richmond Park, the problem has completely gone out of control.

Falling into potholes

The potholes have now evolved into huge craters. Each day, travelling along Grants Crescent has now become a major challenge as it requires gymnastic skills for children and pedestrians, especially women, to manoeuvre the huge crater-like potholes that plague our road and this situation worsens whenever it rains.

Several pedestrians have unfortunately lost their balance and have fallen into these potholes on various occasions while attempting to jump across them.

Motorists who have opted to challenge these potholes often do so to their own detriment. Being unable to judge the depths due to rainwater, they often suffer the ill fate of shutting off in the middle of the road. In doing so, they block residents from driving in or in some cases even walking into their homes.

We would like the minister of local government, the National Works Agency, the good mayor of Kingston and our member of parliament to use their combined efforts to assist us.

I am, etc.,
