Project eyes 12,000 - Free vision screening under way islandwide

Twelve thousand Jamaicans will be targeted under phase two of the Jamaica-Cuba Eye Project's islandwide eye screening, which started Monday.

According to project coordinator, Claudette Yearde, the project is seeking to expand its reach in response to the increase in some common eye conditions, chief among them cataracts.

"We have identified the need to screen more Jamaicans for common eye conditions such as cataracts and so we have set an ambitious, yet achievable target of 12,000 Jamaicans for phase two," Yearde said.

Screening activities

Screening activities for February 2-6 are scheduled to take place at the Savanna-la-Mar Health Department, starting at 9 a.m.

The team will also be at the Negril Health Centre from February 9-12. Green Island Health Centre will host the team on February 23, 24, 26 and 27.

"Under phase two of the Jamaica-Cuba Eye Care Project, the team will be visiting the parishes of Westmoreland, St James, Hanover and Trelawny," Yearde said.
