Drought to disrupt water supply

Customers of the National Water Commission (NWC) could be affected by nightly water restrictions because of water supply shortages associated with ongoing drought conditions.

The NWC said that as of Monday, customers served by the Constant Spring and Havendale systems in St Andrew would experience restrictions between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.

Meanwhile, customers in Mt Salus, St Andrew, will receive their supply on alternate days.

The utility company said it would continue to monitor the present drought situation and would make adjustments as the situation warranted.

"Customers are, therefore, encouraged to store water for the periods of disruption and also to conserve water to avoid the need for further modifications to the water restriction measures," the NWC said.

Four basic ways to save water

Economise: Be conscious of the amount of water you utilise and use less whenever you can.

Fix leaks: A leak of merely one drop per second, wastes 2,400 gallons per year! Most leaks are easy to repair with some basic know-how and a few simple tools.

Water-saving devices: There are a number of simple devices that can significantly reduce water usage. These include aerators, flow regulators and displacement devices.

Reuse water: Used water, such as at the kitchen sink and the washstand, is often suitable for other purposes. If this 'grey water' is used more than once, it saves water for other uses.
