Bringing the law into disrepute
The Editor, Sir:

Regarding the news story, 'Non-smoking in public laws being considered', I think the Government should leave this one alone, at least until it is thought out properly.

Enacting laws which cannot be enforced, to my mind, only has the effect of bringing the laws into disrepute.

At the moment, people smoke ganja with contempt in public places, even in the presence of the police, without any action being taken.

They park in 'no parking' zones; they drive in the opposite direction on one-way streets, and I could go on and on.

Instead of bringing more laws into effect, we should be seeking to enforce those we have. More and more, as these lesser laws are broken with impunity, the elephant goes farther and farther into the tent, and the whole thing is seen as one big joke.

I am a non-smoker, but at this time when more people will want to 'light up' to ease the economic pressures, I think the Government should concentrate on ways to make life easier for people, instead of being seen as repressive.

I am, etc.,
