STETHS open Headley Cup defence
Richard Bryan, Gleaner Writer

With the knockout challenge over, rural schools will turn their attention to the Grace ISSA Headley Cup as action bowls off today with a full slate of matches in all eight zones.

Newly crowned knockout champions, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), will begin their defence in the longer version playing host in Zone C to B.B. Coke in Santa Cruz. Only four teams are in this zone, thus leaving Maggotty to host the other match against Newell at Appleton.

Opening matches

Last year's beaten finalists Manchester, who also came out on the losing end again to STETHS in last Friday's knockout final, will open their campaign, travelling to Spaldings to play Knox College in Zone D. Holmwood, who last won the Headley Cup in 2006, will travel to Albert Town in another key Zone D encounter.

Frome Technical, which reached the semi-finals of the knockout Cup, host Godfrey Stewart in the key Zone B matchup. Zone E is likely to be the most competitive where Vere, Garvey Maceo, Kemps Hill, Old Harbour and Glenmuir all have strong credentials at this level.

Vere, a semi-finalist knockout Cup host Edwin Allen, Garvey Maceo entertain Glenmuir, Old Harbour await Kemps Hill while Tacius Golding battle Clarendon College in probably the zone's weakest matchup.

Other selected matches of interest are Titchfield vs St Thomas Technical (Zone F), Dinthill vs Islington (Zone G) and York Castle vs Tacky (Zone H).
