I have found Devon Dick's article of January 29 lacking in substance and deficient in good research. Was the Reverend in so much haste to have his piece published that he couldn't at least make a phone call to the governor general-designate to get some basic information concerning his involvement in community life as a part of his qualification to serve the office?
May I point out too that while Dr Patrick Allen served as leader of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church in West Indies Union (WIU) with distinction, he is not an embodiment of the SDA church. He just happens to be an SDA member. Dr Allen enjoys the same status in membership in the church as any other member, so to say his appointment as GG is a link of Church and State, is false.
As a matter of fact, Dr Allen would have resigned Wednesday in anticipation of the election of a new president of WIU. He no longer speaks on behalf of the church, but continues to enjoy membership.
Were Sir Howard Cooke and Professor Hall members of any church group? Were their appointments symbolic of Church/ State union?
Rev Dick, in your next article, try and answer your question: 'Who wants to be a GG?' Do you?
I am, etc.,
