Air Jamaica a victim of apathy
The Editor, Sir:

Regarding Air Jamaica's cutting of routes and possible demise, while some people will say 'good for them', from my perspective, once again, a great Jamaican institution has been destroyed by bad management, as well as the Jamaican people's apathy.

They say, "Cow nuh know the use of him tail until him lose it." Years ago, before the rise of American Airlines (AA), we had the Eastern Airlines fiasco, which I remember painfully well. We have again set ourselves up for more pain.

Short memories

Sadly, we Jamaicans are destined to have short memories and repeat past mistakes, over and over. It is a shame this had to happen as Air Jamaica really is a good airline. Travel with other carriers around the world and you might not be so hard on them.

As to the Miami gateway closing, that I can understand, as the writing was on the wall a long time. Fort Lauderdale is a better airport, especially for Jamaicans travelling to Florida, and has been popular for some time.

I am sorry that they could not hold on to some of the routes to the Eastern Caribbean, as they had a nice stopover policy that enabled you to 'chill in Jamaica' for a day or two en route to the other countries. But the London gateway mess demonstrated the future was not bright or well thought out.

I am, etc.,
