England score easy victory in St Kitts

Strauss ... made an unbeaten 103. - File

BASSETERRE, St Kitts (CMC):

CODVILLE ROGERS struck his second half-century of the match, but could not prevent St Kitts and Nevis from tumbling to a 217-run defeat at the hands of England, on the final day of their three-tour match yesterday.

Set an impossible target of 438 runs to win in two sessions at Warner Park, the hosts were bundled out for 221 with the left-handed Rogers scoring an entertaining 79 from just 83 balls, to follow up his 63 in the first innings on Monday.

Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar continued to impress ahead of the first Test next week, finishing with 3-51 while pacer Stuart Broad (2-18) and rookie legspinner Adil Rashid (2-67) claimed two wickets apiece.

Poor batting

St Kitts and Nevis lost Kejel Tyson (five) and Steve Liburd (10) early as the hosts slipped to 48 for two, but Shane Jeffers offered some resistance with 41 from 54 balls, which included seven fours.

When he perished with the score on 79, Rogers and Junie Mitchum joined forces in a solid 89-run fourth wicket stand, which appeared to put the hosts on course for a draw.

Rogers hammered 13 fours in 116 minutes at the crease and got great support from Mitchum whose 30 was more measured, requiring 59 balls with two fours.

However, Mitchum's dismissal at 168 triggered a dramatic collapse which saw the last seven wickets tumble for 53 runs, as England snatched a comfortable victory.

Earlier, England captain Andrew Strauss converted his overnight unbeaten 59 into 103 as the tourists declared their second innings at 265 for five, shortly after lunch.

Strauss, removed without scoring in the first innings, hit 12 fours and a six in an innings that spanned 176 balls and 142 minutes, after England resumed the day at 118 without loss.

Ian Bell found form with 52, while opener Alastair Cook retired on his overnight score of 50.

England will now turn their attention to another three-day game against West Indies 'A' at Warner Park starting tomorrow.
