POINTE-A-PIERRE, Trinidad (CMC):
Amit Jaggernauth produced a six-wicket haul and triggered a huge Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) victory over the Windward Islands in their WICB Regional Four-day match yesterday.
Set a daunting target of 373 runs to win, the Windwards crashed to 206 all out before tea on the last day of the Guaracara Park fixture.
Windwards middle-order batsman Darren Sammy staged a near two-hour resistance but could not deny T&T, who skipped past a mild rain threat and marched to their first win of the season, with Jaggernauth snaring six for 47 off 24 overs, with seven maidens.
With the victory, T&T hurdled Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) and the Windward Islands and moved from fifth to third in the standings on 21 points entering the fourth round.
They trail leaders Jamaica (30) and Barbados (27) and left the Windwards and CCC in joint fourth on 12 points each.
Sammy battled in a futile effort to deny the home side and stroked a fighting half-century, while wickets were tumbling around him. The tall St Lucian struck 61 in 111 minutes, but the Windwards declined steadily from their overnight position of 82 for three to the brink of defeat at lunch, going to the break at 190 for eight.
Rain during the lunch break prevented a prompt restart and only delayed the inevitable result.
Jaggernauth, included in the West Indies first Test squad to face England, had Lyndon James (13) caught at long-on at 205 for nine and left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed quickly sealed the win at 2:10 p.m. local time when he trapped Shane Shillingford leg before wicket for eight. Mohammed provided solid support for Jaggernauth's six-wicket haul, recording figures of three for 50 off 20.3 overs.
There was bitter-sweet news for T&T's young batting star Darren Bravo.
The 19-year-old left-hander was named Man of the Match for his first-innings 105, but will be sidelined for up to three weeks because of a finger injury he suffered while fielding on Sunday. Bravo dislocated the middle finger on his right and is now forced to miss the West Indies 'A' team's match against touring England starting Thursday in St Kitts.
