Belgian dogs here to fight crime
Veteran dog breeder Michael Fisher is convinced that a new breed of dog he is introducing to the island will significantly aid in the safety and security of its owners better than any dog before.

The Belgian Malinois, which are known as the Ferrari of dogs, were brought directly into the island from Belgium and France by Fisher.

Currently, there are only two dogs of this breed in the island, and they are both owned by Fisher, who is convinced that the way dogs are currently being bred in Jamaica do not make them effective protectors.

"It's no secret that Jamaica needs better security, and I think the reason why Pitbulls got so popular was because the crime rate was up but the dog breeding programme in Jamaica was going down against the criminal," Fisher told The Gleaner.

Fisher, who was raised in a tradition of dog breeding, said he has noticed that dogs locally are not being bred specifically for the purpose of protection, and in observing that decline, he was moved to act.

"I was a little fed up with what was being bred out here, and decided I was going to go all the way to Belgium, all the way to France, to find a dog that can start doing the job to protect us here in Jamaica again, and I found the Belgian Malinois," he said.

Best all-round dogs

The Belgian Malinois is a naturally skilled, trainable and all-round excellent dog. It should be noted that the United States Secret Service and Royal Australian Air Force exclusively use the breed - that means they trust no other dog for their work.

President of the Jamaica Kennel Club, Joe Auxilly, confirmed the value of the dogs, and hailed them as probably the best all-round dogs.

"All dogs have some quality that the Belgian Malinois has. But what the Belgian Malinois has is the (full) package," he explained. "The real story behind the Belgian Malinois is that they are working dogs ... that's why they are excellent for guard work, security work," said Auxilly.

Pups for $80,000!

Michael Fisher is expecting his first set of pups by February, and they are expected to go for $80,000 each.

Only males will be offered for now. He may be contacted at 793-0001.
