Tivoli, Rema people are not barbarians
The Editor, Sir:

I read with utter dismay the 'I had a dream' letter written by Glenn Tucker and published in The Sunday Gleaner on January 25.

While I agree wholeheartedly that there are serious security concerns associated with the compromised reliability of our prime minister's vehicle, I take serious issue with the two neighbourhoods the writer singled out to demonstrate how dangerous it could be, suffering a vehicular breakdown on the road.

Poor reputation

Rema and Tivoli Gardens, over the years, I admit, have earned a poor reputation when it comes to violence. However, I think in all fairness, the references to these neighbourhoods in the context of the letter is very offensive, to say the least, as violence has permeated even the seemingly safest places on Earth and violence does not occur unprovoked or in a vacuum.

While there are elements who would gladly see to the demise of others without provocation, the people of these areas are not the barbarians the writer tries to depict them to be.

Said writer could have easily said "gave up the ghost somewhere on the road in the dark" instead of "gave up the ghost somewhere in Rema".

The people of these neighbourhoods are actually quite friendly and helpful.

Obviously, that writer has no idea of the amount of goodwill in this nation. I know the level of kindness that exists in these places and have been a recipient of same.

Tucker should apologise to the people of the communities he named in his letter.

I am, etc.,

HENSLEY CAMERON
