Parents need time off for school visits
The Editor, Sir:

It is high time that all interests in the education system be held accountable for our children's performance. We keep on laying the blame at the feet of one individual all the time and do not realise that no one person can make the difference.

It is with this mind that I recommend that the Government make it mandatory that all employers allow parents or guardians time to visit school to attend important events.

Too many times, parents would love to visit their children's school to find out about their children's academic performance and behaviour, but they are not given the time to do so.

Once there is evidence that an event will be taking place at the school, then that parent should have the right to attend. There are events, such as parent-teacher meetings and report-collection day.

After all, if parents are spending so much money to send their children to school, they need to see the fruit of their labour. When a teacher and even students see that someone is interested, then more interest will be shown on the part of everyone.

Bad situation

Can you imagine that there are some students whose parents have never been to the school and they do not even know the name of the class that the child is in? This is bad.

Parents should be allowed time to attend school functions even once per term. This may not solve even a quarter of the problems, but we have to start from somewhere and we must let our children know that someone cares about them, and not just by giving them money to attend school.

I am, etc.,
