Leave schools to academicians
The Editor, Sir:

With regard to the Reverend Al Miller's call to place the entire basic and primary schools in the hands of the Church, this seems to assume the 'Church' as a uniformed entity, when to my knowledge it is not.

What are the criteria that would be used to determine which denomination of all the various ones out there would be entrusted with this job ?

Miller talks about "moral and spiritual principles" that can be passed on. These "spiritual principles" differ from church to church. Getting consensus could be chaotic.

Of course, the most serious matter is that it is a dangerous thing for the State to get into the business of disseminating and endorsing individual religions.

If a child of Christian upbringing wants to learn maths, English, etc, there should not be state-endorsed blackmail forcing him to be bludgeoned with Islam or Christianity.

Religion is best left to the 1,001 denominations that exist and schools left to academicians.

I am, etc.,
