A recipe for crime and violence
The Editor, Sir:

It is my belief that the exposure of our youths to violent music and violent movies is contributing to the crime situation in our society.

I have sat and watched children and I have grown to realise that many are addicted to video games with a violent theme.

Children often memorise and speak the words expressed in the games. Children will sing as many songs with gun lyrics as sung by the recording artiste. The songs taught at school are not treated in the same way. Parents will literally have to administer strong disciplinary measures to keep the child focused on school work.

Parents do have a tough job especially the single parents, but this should not limit the time with their children.

I am not denouncing these games, but I strongly suggest that parents on a whole take steps to control their use. On the other hand, operators of video games stores who operate these gaming rooms should look at an age limit governing the use of these games. Our society should find ways of protecting our youths with a view to implementing systems to control their exposure to violent material.

I strongly suggest that:

1. A tariff code be implemented to classify certain types of video games that contain violence.

2. Parents implement parental control measures on the Internet at home by means of passwords.

3. Radio and television bodies should seriously look into implementing a system of controlling the content of their air waves.

We should look at educating our children through all the electronic and printed media presentations.

I am, etc.,
