Reno spank listless Waterhouse

WESTERN BUREAU:

Westmoreland-based Reno Football Club delivered a 4-1 spanking to Waterhouse FC at the Frome Sports Ground in Westmoreland yesterday, in the Digicel Premier League football competition.

Reno were propelled to victory by a double strike from Troy 'Bootha' Reid in the latter stages of the game. They took the lead in the 17th minute via a penalty converted by Patrick Graham, after an advancing Obrian Woodbine was brought down in the penalty area.

Two minutes later, Draion McNain slid past the Waterhouse defence and lobbed the ball past the goalkeeper and into the right side of the goal to double the lead.

Waterhouse's lone goal came from striker Kevin Lamey, just minutes before the end of the first half.

No equaliser

But their hopes of producing an equaliser were dashed, courtesy of the diminutive Reid, who converted his double strike first by weaving his way past the Waterhouse defence and then proving unstoppable when less than two minutes later, he capitalised on a tussle in the penalty area, leaving the Waterhouse players dumbfounded.

Waterhouse's coach, Anthony Patrick, did not mince words.

"I think because of the lack of discipline on the part of the senior players we were able to give up some soft goals," he said. "Three simple goals! The attitude of the senior players was a disgrace. The club has to take a stand and look at some of the players and find out if they really want to play."

On the reverse side, the Reno coach, Wendell Downswell, was overjoyed at his team's win.

"I am very elated, extremely elated about the victory, especially since we lost the last two home games. This is probably one of the largest victories in the league so far. We think this augurs well for us. We must thank the supporters. Despite the adversities, they rallied behind us and we hope we will move from strength to strength," Downswell said.

He said the team had been affected by the absence of four of its under-20 players, who were overseas on national duties, but were now at full strength due to their return.
