It was an evening of golden celebrations, thanksgiving and memories. The family home in Stony Hill sparkled with everything gold (including candles) and there was an overwhelming feeling of family as Rupert and Joy Robinson were honoured for their commitment to God and each other over five decades.
In attendance were members of the original bridal party - Roenna Lopez, the flower girl, and Daphne Robinson, a bridesmaid. Mrs Robinson's wedding dress and Rupert's wedding gloves were on display, along with original wedding gifts and photographs. Rev Abner Powell of All Saint's Anglican Church, where the couple was married on November 29, 1958, officiated again as they renewed vows.
Even with over 80 guests present there were still many other family members and friends unable to make it. So greetings and blessings from sections of Canada and Florida were recorded on DVDs. The couple started this journey at a Boxing Day fair where Rupert was looking for someone to dance with and Joy looked the part. One thing led to another and the rest is history.
four children
Their four children (three girls, one boy) also paid tribute, including Karen Robinson, the youngest child, who spoke of the joy in seeing both their faces in her own, and Grace Robinson, the middle girl, who thanked her father for setting a bar of excellence as a parent and partner; and her mother for teaching her how to bring people together by breaking bread.
In their replies the couple was visibly touched. Mrs Robinson thanked her children for making the anniversary so special, while Mr Robinson noted the challenges over the 50-year journey, but emphasised that marriage was the best institution on this side of eternity.
