Super League campaigners Duhaney Park secured their spot in the semi-finals of the Western Union Jackie Bell knockout competition with a stunning 1-0 victory over Premier League outfit Waterhouse in a quarter-final match at Baldwin Crescent yesterday.
Former national player and substitute Patrick Beech secured the lone goal for the hosts in the 75th minute.
Waterhouse dominated the first half, but were kept out by a very organised Duhaney Park defensive unit, as long-range shots by Jermaine Anderson and Irvino English long-range efforts went wide of the target.
Duhaney Park's Ricardo Smith's point-blank shot was tipped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Jovel Plunkett on the stroke of half-time.
Long-range shot
Christopher Russell, coach of Duhaney Park, then introduced Beech midway the second period, and the move almost paid off immediately as his long-range shot was well saved by Plunkett, who went low at full stretch to his left.
However, Beech, who was proving to be a handful for the Waterhouse defenders with his quick dribbling skills, rose above two defenders to head home from point-blank range past Plunkett.
A few minutes later, Duhaney Park's Reynaldo Bennett's 25-yard shot was spectacularly saved by Plunkett.
Anderson got a glorious chance to earn the equaliser in the dying moments of the match, but his shot inside the six-yard box was well saved by custodian Omar Williams.
"The players have been saying that they wanted to win this game because they know that we have a good history in the knockout competition," Russell said.
He added that he hoped his team could now move from strength to strength, as they have not been doing well in the Super League.
He said Beech has lifted the spirits of the players as he is a very experienced player.
"We were very happy to get him from Rivoli (United)," Russell said.
Tough loss
Meanwhile, Hugh 'Bingi' Blair, coach of Waterhouse, said, "It is a tough loss for us because I think that as a team we need to score lots of goals whenever we play against the lesser teams. We created a lot of chances and we were just unable to score them and I think we will have to go back to the drawing board ..."
He added that his team had not taken their opponents lightly.
He reasoned, however, that Duhaney Park stuck to their task and fought well to the end.
