I was born and raised in a small community in north east Manchester called Lower Halifax. From this place, many industrious persons have come, who have served Jamaica at very high levels.
Among them are Rev Robert Foster, bishop of the Moravian Church; Mrs Lucinda Peart, former principal of the Bethlehem Teachers College; and Vivian Whyte, former principal of Villa Road Primary and Junior High. There are many others, including two trained graduates living in the community and a soon to be retired teacher. The Jamaica Constabulary Force has has about six coming out of this same community. They have all reached senior positions and Detective Superintendent Maurice Goodgame is one of them. His sister, Madge Goodgame, is a stenographer, who serves the Government of this country.
Out of this now forsaken place has come three lawyers, one soldier, a few nurses, an auditor, a chartered accountant and entrepreneurs.
Shame
So, you see, we all serve Jamaica and contribute greatly to its economy. Yet, for all of my 60 years, political representatives apparently have not deemed it their duty to do something concerning the road leading into Lower Halifax.
If we could buy a vehicle, who wants to drive it daily on the roads in the community? When these persons whom I have named come home to visit, they have to park on the main road and finish the journey on foot, Isn't this a shame?
Mr Golding, I have gone to Yonder Pond in Hibernia (smile) and I noticed every little road is paved. What I have deduced from this is that places where the votes come from get all the benefits. Not the people who contribute most to the economy. I am dog-sick of walking, but the road is 'too darn bad'. Please, do something 'fe we nuh sah'!
You said in your campaigning that "we are too blessed to be stressed". The road is causing all of us who live there to be very very stressed. Please, Sir, emulate my alma mater's motto, Facta non verba (deeds not words) in applying your authority to alleviate this terrible situation. I hope to see some action in the near future.
I am, etc.,
