Gravel Heights residents hoping for rise in property values
Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:

Residents in Gravel Heights, the St Catherine community which received an ultimatum from armed thugs, are hopeful that the presence of security forces will elevate property values there.

Citizens have said that a gang feud that escalated early in December 2008 not only forced residents to flee, but triggered a depression in housing values, turning off house hunters and others seeking rentals.

Very good environment

"With the soldiers and police now here, it is very good, as those of us whose properties were being devalued can now try to sell if we want to, as the community itself that surrounds Gravel Heights is being affected badly," said Adassa Tulloch, a resident.

Her views were consistent with those of other residents in Gravel Heights, whose plight sparked outcry nationally, including intervention from Prime Minister Bruce Golding.

Security checkpoints

On Monday, security checkpoints were being manned by military and police personnel.

Amid the presence of the lawmen, normality has begun to return as schoolchildren and other residents moved freely through the area. Some residents who had fled the community have begun to return.

The scene was a stark contrast a month ago when residents loaded furniture and other possessions on to trucks after gunmen ordered them to leave the area.
