Waiting for right leadership
The Editor, Sir:

Most Jamaicans are bemoaning the fact that a change in government has not produced the desired results. In fact, in many instances, the social and economic conditions in the country have grown significantly worse. While much of this can be attributed to a global economic downturn coupled with other external stimuli, the sad reality is Jamaicans have demonstrated so far an inability to govern themselves effectively.

Prior to Independence, Jamaica was a symbol of growth and accomplishment, but since Independence, the country has regressed. The rate of regression has been more evident in the last 20 years. Today, Jamaica is a cesspool of crime and corruption. A once calm and orderly nation has been replaced by one of lawlessness and rampant indiscipline. A once happy and carefree people now cower with fear as marauding thugs roam the streets with wild abandon. Proud educational institutions that once produced graduates that could compete with the best in the world now graduate students who are barely literate. Dancehall sessions have now replaced studying.

Effective leaders

The role of effective leaders is not only to govern well, but to set the tone for their people. They should be role models with a moral clarity and purpose. Strong and decisive, they should appear fair and impartial. But, above all, they should engender hope among their people.

Unfortunately, Jamaica has not had this type of leadership in a very long time. The hold of leaders on power is largely due to tomfoolery and chicanery. They fail to understand that if they lead well, if people's lives are better, they will hold on to power for a long time. Rational human beings stick to what is working for them.

Jamaica can return to its former glory. It is just waiting for the right type of leadership.

I am, etc.,
