Peddling 'badmanism'
The Editor, Sir:

I am pleading with the powers that be - the Broadcasting Commission, the Government and even promoters - to take a stand against the culture of death being spewed by our deejays, among them Vybz Kartel and Mavado. I cannot understand why reputable radio and television stations continue to feed this garbage to the nation's children and then wonder why there is a moral breakdown in society.

At least the deejays of yesteryear were witty and talented with their lyrics. These guys know nothing but evil and package it calling it music. I am as pro dancehall as any other person, but I realise someone has to take a stand against this madness that is now being referred to as music. There are too many apologists who are running to their defence saying it is about their reality, or 'life in the ghetto', or 'free speech'. Do these same people realise that they are helping to fuel the anger and 'badmanship' in society?

Careless rhetoric

Parents, I implore all of us, take a stand! Let not this letter just be another statistic in the pile about deejays and their careless rhetoric. Let us initiate a movement to rein in what is played in public and how our children are exposed to it. Give a message to these guys that we love our dancehall music, but dancehall doesn't mean death, rape and destruction.

I am, etc.,
