  • Ramgeet triple

    TAMPA BAY, Florida (CMC):

Jamaican jockey Andrew Ramgeet recorded a triple success at the Tampa Bay Downs midweek card on Wednesday.

The three-time Jamaica champion landed races one, six and nine and jumped into the Top-10 of the jockeys' standings with four wins in the three-week-old season.

In the US$8,100 first race over 6-1/2 furlongs, Ramgeet steered the 5-to-2 favourite Roaring River to a come-from-behind victory by 1-3/4 lengths in one minute 21.11 seconds.

He then won the US$9,800 sixth race over a mile and 40 yards with the 4-5 favourite Juicy Point.

Ramgeet completed his triple with another favourite Dee's Rose in the US$20,400 ninth race over 6-1/2 furlongs.

  • Tottenham win

    LONDON (AP):

Roman Pavlyuchenko scored twice as Tottenham beat Wigan 3-1 to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup yesterday.

Russian striker Pavlyuchenko scored from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after debutant Wigan goalkeeper Richard Kingson was judged to have brought down Fraizer Campbell. Croatia striker Modric added a second in the 76th after a shot from Jamie O'Hara hit the post.

Although Henri Camara replied for the Latics in the 88th, Pavlyuchenko made sure that eight-time FA Cup winner Spurs made it to the last 32 of football's oldest domestic cup competition with his second goal in injury time.

The 32 third-round games have been spread over four days with 28 today, two tomorrow and one on Monday. The four traditional powerhouses avoided each other in the draw and all meet teams from the lower divisions.

Manchester United, who are the record 11-time FA Cup winner, go to Southampton tomorrow. Chelsea host Southend, Arsenal welcome Plymouth and Liverpool visit Preston with Steven Gerrard leading the team even though he faces criminal assault and affray charges arising out of a brawl at a nightclub last Sunday.

Portsmouth begin their defence today at home to Bristol City from the second-tier League Championship.

  • Day-night Tests!

    SYDNEY, Australia (AP):

The International Cricket Council's chief says dwindling attendance at Test matches could speed up the possibility of day-night fixtures, if a suitable ball could be developed.

ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat, speaking at a press conference yesterday to mark the council's 100th anniversary, endorsed a call by Cricket Australia head James Sutherland for day-night Tests in an effort to improve attendance and television ratings.

"The lack of crowd attendance at many grounds around the globe is a cause for concern," Lorgat said. "In that was the possibility of exploring day-night cricket because there is no doubt James Sutherland has put that on the table.

"We all know the technical difficulties on that. If that's an answer to ensuring the status it has because it's a better time proposition, then I would be in favor of it."

The main technical difficulty is the ball. Wear on the ball is a key factor in Tests and day-night Tests would need to find a method to replicate the wear when switching from a red ball during the day to a white ball at night, or develop a ball that was equally visible in day and night sessions.
