My Jamaican To Five (5)

Arlene Wright

This week Saturday Life takes a step back into the childhood years of Arlene Wright, 36, where we'll reveal her five favourite games.

  • 5. Ring game (Miss Nancy):

This is one of the best primary-school games. A lot of fun is involved and it can be quite interesting ... well, at least back then it was. Miss Nancy was one of the top games, next to marbles, which was enjoyed at break time. Sometimes, if you like one of your classmates, you could use the game to hint at it. Good times - we just were carefree back then!

  • 4. Chiney skip:

My sisters and I always used to play this game when we were bored. I liked putting the elastic bands together to form the ring; it was a simple but fun thing to do in our leisure time. For some reason, I can't seem to forget this game. It's one of those childhood things that stick into your mind.

  • 3. Jump rope (skipping):

This is a game and also a form of exercise. It's good for toning those muscles, you know! I've got to keep in shape, from dem time deh till now. But mi nah go lie, mi nuh do it as much now.

Skipping was nice still; it looks simple but you have to be skilled to go a long time without stopping the rope with your feet. Every time when I'm skipping with friends and I get out, I can't wait to go back in. I just love the energy and the anticipation involved in the game.

  • 2. Domino:

If you don't like domino, yuh anno Jamaican! Every Sunday, when I was younger, me and my family and friends used to play domino. Even now, I still play it when I get the time. At first, I used to just match the dominoes but now I read the game so I don't get six (love) anymore. Now, I give all the six. I even have my own pack of dominoes at my home right now!

  • 1. Dandy-shandy:

One of the best games ever! You have to fit to play this game! Just the thrill of playing makes you look forward to playing it again. The dodging, the excitement, the feeling of accomplishment when you win, Mi love it, man!

The different moves and trying not to get hit in your head out of the juice box - this is the best game ever! The best time to play is when the evening is approaching and it's girls against boys. Wi nuh stop beat the boys. A so it set, man.
